4.5/5.0

Citi Rewards Visa Card is one of the best miles cards and best shopping cards, especially for active shoppers. With 4 miles for every S$1 spent on shopping both online and offline, Citi Rewards card has the best rewards program we’ve seen in this category. Most other cards that offer high reward on shopping limits it to either specific offline retail stores or online, but Citi Rewards card covers both. It also provides 14% off on petrol at Esso and Shell, though we do admit 0.4 miles on other purchases is pretty dismal. For this reason, we highly recommend Citi Rewards Visa Card only to active shoppers who can earn enough miles to offset the high S$192.6 of annual that is not waived.

Pros of Citi Rewards Card

  • 4 miles (10 reward points) for every S$1 spent on shopping (including online), 8 miles (20 reward points) at selected department stores in Singapore
  • Up to 14% off on petrol at Esso and Shell
  • Promotion: 8 miles per S$1 spent on Lazada and Amazon
  • Bonus: S$120 cash back

      Cons of Citi Rewards Card

      • High annual fee of S$192.6, waived for 1 year
      • 0.4 miles (1 reward points) on other expenses

What makes the Citi Rewards Card stand out

While Citi Rewards Visa Card is a very expensive card to use, we think it provides extremely rich rewards for those who not only love to shop, but also shop often. The annual fee is quite high around S$192.6 and Citi does not provide any waivers for the annual fee. To help make the card more affordable, Citi Rewards provides 10,000 miles when you pay the annual fee each year. It also provides a S$120 of welcome cash credit when you apply online. If a mile is worth about S$0.01, that’s almost S$220 of value which offsets the whole first year’s annual fee and more.

Where Citi Rewards outshines others is its reward program on shopping. It provides a whopping 10 reward points (4 miles) for every S$1 you spend on shoes, clothes or bags both within Singapore and overseas. It doesn’t matter if you shop at department stores or on websites. All of your purchases will earn you 4 miles. Since miles are worth anywhere between S$0.01 and S$0.08, that’s theoretically equivalent to 4% to 32% rebate on your shopping expenses.

This card may not be so valuable for people who don’t shop actively given that all other purchases only accrue 1 reward point (0.4 miles). However, Citi Rewards aims to provide more value with up to 14% off on petrol at Esso and Shell, and numerous promotional deals like additional discounts at certain retailers or 20x points (8 miles) for S$1 spent on promotional categories or stores.

Citi Rewards Card vs Citi PremierMiles Card

Citi PremierMiles Card is a much more versatile miles card than Citi Rewards card. PremierMiles earns 1.2 miles for every S$1 spent locally and 2 miles for S$1 spent overseas. You also get a welcome gift of up to 30,000 miles as a new member. We think PremierMiles is a much better card for people who don’t shop as much and have a budget that is spread out across many categories like petrol, groceries and dining. If you're a consumer who is willing to jump through a few hoops to get extra savings and earn miles concurrently, Citi PremierMiles Card is great for because it’s relatively affordable to use, earns great miles and provides flexible redemption with over 60 airlines and 8,000 hotel properties.

Citi Rewards Card vs Citi Prestige MasterCard Credit Card

      Citibank Prestige Mastercard Card

Citi Prestige MasterCard Credit Card is essentially a higher-end version of Citi PremierMiles Card. While Citi PremierMiles Visa Card charges S$192.6 of annual fee (no waiver), Citi Prestige MasterCard Card costs S$535 per year to use (1st year waiver). Because of this difference, Prestige awards you 1.3 miles for your local spend vs 1.2 miles awarded by PremierMiles. Prestige also includes many more perks like unlimited VIP lounge access, SPG Gold Status and a whole bunch of other rewards. Other things are more or less the same. Both cards reward you 2 miles for every dollar spent overseas and 10x miles for every dollar spent on travel.

PremierMiles has a welcome bonus of 30,000 miles, while Prestige is giving out 25,000 miles of welcome award. So if you are looking for a decent travel card that doesn’t require a lot of spending and you don’t care much for perks, Citi PremierMiles Visa Card might be a better choice for you. If you like to travel in style and you have the budget to support a high level of expense, we think Citi Prestige MaterCard Card could be a better fit.

Citi Rewards Card vs Standard Chartered SingPost Platinum Visa Credit Card

Standard Chartered Singpost Platinum Visa Credit Card is a cashback credit card that we recommend to active online shoppers. Not only does this card offer 7% discount on online shopping, one of the best deals available in Singapore for the category, it also has a low minimum spend requirement that makes it very easy to manage along with other cards you may use to maximize the total cashback you earn. If you like to shop but would also like a more affordable card than Citi Rewards, Standard Chartered SingPost Platinum could be a great alternative since it waivers its S$180 of annual for 2 whole years.

*ValuePenguin calculates the dollar value of rewards based on S$2,000 of monthly spending. We sum the value of points, miles and cashback in dollar terms and subtract the annual fee over a 24-month period. The estimates here are ValuePenguin's alone, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by the credit card issuer.
