If you live your life split between Singapore and Malaysia and want to get great discounts in both countries, Maybank Family & Friends MasterCard Credit Card might be one of the best cards for you. This unique cashback card offered by Maybank, the biggest bank of Malaysia, provides a number of benefits and perks that are versatile especially for people who have to spend considerable amount of time across Singapore and Malaysia, not just travel. Given how easy it is to get the annual fee waiver & fully realize its awards, this card is good for low and high spenders alike. We should also note that this card is a cashback card, not air miles card. However, given its benefits are available in both Singapore and Malaysia, we’ve decided to include it in the Best Travel Cards in Singapore under a specific niche.

What makes Maybank Family & Friends MasterCard Credit Card stand out

This card is unique among our card selection for a number of reasons. First of all, it’s very cheap to use. Your already low S$800 annual fee is waived as long as you spend only S$1,000 a month on the card for the first year. It also has one of the lowest APR available in the market of 15% compared to more typical rates of 25%. And for those who use credit cards often overseas, it only charges 1% foreign currency transaction fee compared to 2.5% charged by competing products.

Furthermore, unlike most other credit cards that we have reviewed, this card doesn’t really provide any air mile awards. However, we like this card as a travel card for people who go back and forth between Singapore and Malaysia because of its generous cashback rewards across the two countries. For your petrol, groceries, fast food delivery and taxi ride expenditures in both countries, Maybank Family & Friends MasterCard will provide up to 8% of cash rebate capped at $600 annually, and 0.3% on everything else. Upon reaching the S$600 cap, you will still receive 0.3% cash rebate in both countries.

We like Maybank Family & Friends card because it allows you to neatly consolidate your spending and discounts in two countries into one card. However, there are a number of other cards that package much higher discounts and rebates for Singapore. If you can find similar cards in Malaysia, you could probably configure a combination of better deals in both countries. Just make sure you don’t mind the hassle of meeting monthly spending requirements on both cards and carrying around multiple cards in your pocket.

There’s another S$80 cash credit for new members if you spend S$400 within the first month. This means you can earn almost S$1,300 of free money in first 2 years of using this card. Considering additional discounts for various entertainment, shopping and dining options, Maybank Family & Friends MasterCard Credit Card is a must have for anyone frequenting Malaysia from Singapore and don’t have the budget to afford high annual fees or minimum spending requirements.

Maybank Family & Friends MasterCard Credit Card vs Maybank Visa Signature Card

We wanted to compare and contrast the two Maybank credit cards that we have reviewed and like. First, they have similarities that make both of them excellent for people with modest budgets. Both are fairly affordable for low spenders, the Maybank Family and Friends MasterCard Credit Card waiving the annual fee with S$12,000 of annual spend and the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature Card waiving the annual fee with S$18,000 of annual spend. Both cards charge only 1% of foreign transaction fee. Both cards require only S$30,000 of annual income to be eligible for Singaporeans), S$45,000 for Malaysians and S$60,000 for other foreigners. Both provide a S$80 cash credit for new members who spend S$400 within the first month of card approval.

The difference, however, is that Maybank Horizon Visa Signature Card provides mile awards for your expenses, as opposed to Family & Friends’ card’s cashback rewards. With 2 miles for every S$1 spent on air tickets, travel packages and overseas, Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card packs in a lot of punch for a no fee card. On top of that, it gives you 3.2 miles for every S$1 spent on petrol, dining, hotel bookings and taxi fares. Maybank Family & Friends card is a great cashback card tailor made for people who spend a considerable amount of time in Malaysia as well as Singapore, but Maybank Horizon Visa Signature is an air miles card most appropriate for working professionals, especially those who frequently go on business trips abroad.
