Sompo Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

Sompo's two travel insurance plans can be characterised as providing middle of the market, balanced protection in most, if not all coverage areas and below-average prices. On the one hand, these plans' relatively seamless coverage means that you won't have to worry about your plan not being there for you when you need it, no matter what kind of circumstance arises. On the other hand, in failing to stand out in any significant way from other plans on the market, Sompo's plans lack that "X factor" that could help make them a clear top choice. Of the two, Sompo's premium-tier policy, the Superior Plan, settles most comfortably into a definitive niche, providing coverage that meets the industry standard at a bargain price. The mid-tier Essential Plan, however, tends to be outperformed by other plans on the market that provide better coverage for the same price or similar coverage for a lower price.

This graph compares the price of all the major travel insurance policies in Singapore for a 1-week trip in the ASEAN region in order to help consumers find the cheapest travel insurance for their trip.

There are some unique benefits that Sompo offers that can benefit families looking to maximise medical and accident coverage. This includes quarantine allowance for normally excluded diseases such as SARS, tuberculosis, H1N1, mumps, rubella and rabies. Additionally, there is a war and terrorism cover, coverage for reconstructive surgery due to burns and recuperation allowance due to accidental miscarriage. This makes Sompo a good choice for families who are expecting or who have young children/elderly relatives who are prone to getting sick. However, you will get the most of these benefits only if you purchase the Superior plan, so if you are in the market for a medically comprehensive budget plan, you may have better luck with other insurers.

Notable Exclusions

Along with a handful of other insurers, Sompo will cover you for war if you are an innocent bystander, accidental miscarriage and certain infectious diseases. Otherwise, the rest of the exclusions are quite standard. You are not covered for manual or hazardous work, pre-existing conditions, trips taken for a specific medical purpose and loss or damage done to items caused by detention or confiscation by official employees.

Sompo Essential Plan

Compared to other mid-tier travel insurance plans, Sompo's Essential Plan offers a medium, balanced level of coverage in most areas at prices that are below the industry average. Nevertheless, the Essential Plan is still outshone by other policies within the tier that provide you with roughly the same degree of protection at a lower price. Specifically, Budget Direct's Comprehensive Plan bears more than a passing resemblance to Sompo's Essential Plan while also maintaining the edge as the cheapest mid-tier plan on the market for most, if not all, kinds of trips.

For travellers seeking higher coverage from their travel insurance plan, you can still do better than the average Sompo Essential Plan. We would also highlight Aviva Travel Plus and Allianz Global Assistance Silver as policies that give you particularly good value for your money and offer superior coverage within the middle tier of travel insurance plans.

Sompo Superior Plan

Sompo's Superior Plan is a high-value choice for individuals seeking a solid premium plan at a bargain price. It provides considerable bang for your buck, featuring an attractive combination of medium coverage with no especial weak points and among the lowest prices within the luxury tier of travel insurance policies for many kinds of trips (especially within ASEAN).

While Sompo's Superior Plan does tend to be extremely affordable for a premium travel insurance plan, its annual policies run around the middle of the pack in terms of cost. Thus, for frequent fliers seeking a bargain on a multi-trip policy, we might point you toward DirectAsia's DA500 Plan instead. It should also be noted that travellers seeking the best coverage money can buy may be better suited by the more expensive, yet more comprehensive luxury plans sold by Aviva (Travel Prestige) and Allianz Global Assistance(Gold).

You will also only be covered for lesiure trekking below 3,500 metres, and for rock climbing on man-made walls.
